Exercise Physiology

Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are widely recognised as the highest qualified health professionals in the design and delivery of exercise services.

An AEP describes a university trained and Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) accredited exercise specialist who possesses the knowledge, skills and competency to design and deliver general physical activity advice and clinical exercise prescription for apparently healthy persons and for those persons with chronic and complex diseases. The strong research and evidence around the profound benefits of exercise and more importantly “targeted and specific exercise” is the reason they play such a vital role in the complete care of manage people suffering pain and injury.

Once an individual has completed the initial stages of rehabilitation they should commence on a specific and individual program for full functional fitness. This program should be designed to not only get them back into their chosen activity, but also to ensure that they return in even better shape to minimise the risk of any re-occurrence.


What conditions does an Exercise Physiologist treat?

  • The management of a range of chronic disease, including conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes (Type I and Type II), hypertension (high blood pressure) and high cholesterol

  • Musculoskeletal disorders - using a graduated approach to strengthening the area and re-educating the body to move correctly.

  • Falls prevention - working to improve  improve muscular strength, balance, balance confidence and walking speed, as well as psychological factors such as mental ability and mood through regular exercise.

  • Sports performance programming, such as assisting and prescribing strength and conditioning programs to athletes and the general population

  • Running gait analysis and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries to assist athletes and the general population with understanding running gait abnormalities.

  • Sports conditioning

Exercise Physiology also plays a central role in the management and prevention of chronic conditions through exercise prescription such as:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

  • Arthritis
  • Cardiovascular disease.

The aims of the exercise physiologist at Recover Sports Medicine include:

  • To provide isolated and end stage rehabilitation to clients.
  • To deliver first class programs to clients with chronic musculoskeletal symptoms in conjunction with some of Australia?s best sports medicine doctors, physiotherapists and other allied health professionals.
  • To offer a unique service of technical analysis and functional biomechanical screening in conjunction with other health professionals.
  • To provide a preventative musculoskeletal screening system that will identify potential causes of injuries.

  • All Exercise Physiologist treatments at Recover Sports Medicine are 60 minute appointments.

We require 24 hours notice of change of appointment / cancellation, otherwise a cancellation fee may apply.
