Running Season

12 Nov 2015

With the sun coming out a little more now that Spring has sprung, the running season is well under way and many runners have commenced their preparation for the Summer running and triathlon events.

As individuals progress through training programs, there is an inevitable increase in mileage, intensity and frequency of training runs, and with this comes a significant load on the body - namely the muscles, tendons and joints.

It is important that you have a progressive training plan and a complimentary strength, flexibility and recovery program in place so as to carefully manage this load and to avoid common overload or overuse injuries. Some common injuries include the following:

  • ITB Friction Syndrome
  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Plantar Fasciitis

An appropriate strength, flexibility and recovery program may include:

  • Massage, myofascial and trigger point releases such as foam rolling
  • Stretches and specific mobility exercises
  • Strength exercises aimed at strengthening inactive and weak muscles and improving performance
  • Clinical Pilates
  • Running technique drills
  • Alter-G Treadmill training
  • Nutrition and hydration
